Heruli, Rugii, and Gepids have often played a secondary role in historical accounts, overshadowed by the Goths and Huns. This is unjust, as these three peoples were significant players on the grand stage between the 3rd and 6th centuries: the three barbarian groups fought with and against the Romans, moved alongside the Huns, and ultimately sought to establish their own kingdoms along the Danube and in the Balkans at the fringes of the Empire. Following this 'barbarian' history provides a better understanding of Roman history. Their fate offers insightful glimpses into a pivotal chapter in the development of Europe.
