Using Switzerland in the 20th century as an example, Patricia Purtschert focuses on two figures that are central to the construction of the nation: the housewife and the mountaineer. She traces how the housewife emerges as a white leader of a civilized and consumer-oriented domesticity, constantly distinguishing herself from racialized others, while the mountaineer embodies white masculinity in the colonial competition for the highest peaks in the world. Colonial whiteness thus proves to be a fundamental element of a deeply gendered nation.
