The complexity of our reality has been one of the most important topics in interdisciplinary theoretical and scientific discussions for two decades. However, it now seems that the research efforts primarily undertaken by natural scientists (physicists, chemists, biologists) have come to a standstill. Perhaps a point has been reached where new impulses can be provided from the perspective of social and humanities scholars (sociologists, geographers, historians). By reflecting on the significance of the terms complexity (the interconnectedness of processes) and emergence (the formation of more complex system and process types from simpler forms), the book aims to highlight the systemic and procedural aspects. Special attention will be given to verifiability.
