Adorno and Eisler's book, which was first published in English in 1947, is considered a classic in both music and film theory. It was created as a collaborative effort in American exile, following two research projects funded by the Rockefeller Foundation: Within the framework of the "Radio Research Project" led by Paul Lazarsfeld, Adorno conducted studies on music in broadcasting, which contributed to the unfinished book "Current of Music" during his lifetime; Eisler explored the functions, possibilities, and limitations of film music in the "Film Music Project." Eisler's work initially focused less on abstract analyses and considerations and more on composing exemplary film scores, followed by the production and evaluation of demonstration films. Among the artistic outcomes of the project is the famous quintet "Fourteen Ways to Describe the Rain.".
