"The Foreign German" is the story of the successful integration of a Tamil refugee who came to Germany as an unaccompanied twelve-year-old boy fleeing the civil war in Sri Lanka. Umeswaran Arunagirinathan recounted the odyssey of his eight-month escape in his 2006 book "Alone on the Run." In his new book, he reflects on his life in his new homeland. As a former refugee and now a German citizen, he seeks to explore the opportunities, expectations, and challenges for successful integration. He also critically engages with the lifestyles of his country of origin. The author aims to foster greater understanding of refugees among Germans while simultaneously encouraging refugees to actively participate in German society.
