Yoko Tawada tells the story of a Loreley who gets lost in the river and ends up on the Elbe in Hamburg in the 1980s. The identities of the characters in this text are fluid, oscillating between man and woman, heterosexual and homosexual, childhood and adulthood. Every opening in the landscape reveals itself as a passage to another world: the cellar in a pub leads to the Islamic world, a botanical garden to the theater, the Elbe to the Rhine, and a photo in a room to Tibet. This text is like water, more fluid and free than prose, yet still a narrative work, not poetry.
