Product details

Many myths and hypotheses surround Konrad Justinger, the first chronicler of Bern. For the first time, this study critically examines the sources related to Justinger's life and work—including new discoveries—that have long been overdue for scrutiny, presenting new and sometimes unexpected insights into Justinger's origins, apprenticeship, and career. Konrad Justinger is not only significant for Bernese historiography but also for late medieval urban chronicling throughout the German-speaking world. In a second part, the study focuses on the concept of Justinger's official Bernese chronicle, which is one of the first and most beautiful examples of urban historiography in the southern German region.
