The construction of mountains, caves, and artificial waterfalls was one of the main tasks of garden art between the late 18th and early 20th centuries. Artificial rock landscapes are central motifs in landscape gardens. The planning and construction of built natural forms were influenced by geological knowledge and the development of new building materials such as lath and Portland cement. Early on, constructed mountain experiences were even perfected with different sound and light effects. A continuation of these natural stagings can be found in amusement parks around 1900, where artificial mountains were made accessible in cave and mountain scenarios.
