Schwemer, Bettina, ed. Antonio Vivaldi composed nearly thirty instrumental works that feature the cello as a solo instrument. Vivaldi had a talent for tailoring his music to the cello, helping to establish this relatively young instrument in the music of his time. The Concerto in G RV 531 is the only double concerto with two solo cellos in Vivaldi's oeuvre. The two solos consistently take center stage with virtuosic passages that are arranged in a way that makes them manageable for the instrument. This edition is based on a careful evaluation of Vivaldi's autographed score as the primary source and rectifies some inconsistencies found in earlier editions. At the same time, it allows for a flexible interpretation of this concerto: it can be performed with a full tutti orchestra or in a soloistic arrangement, and the cello part in the basso continuo group can either be played separately or taken over by the soloists.
