The coordination of complex logistics systems presents enormous challenges for both practitioners and researchers. Complex issues are often broken down into more manageable sub-problems. If there are interdependencies between the sub-problems, these must be taken into account during the decision-making process. Leif Hendrik Meier examines various planning systems and their interdependencies in container terminals and systematically conducts experiments to improve process coordination. It becomes evident that overarching planning has significant potential for optimizing relevant logistics metrics.
