In the modern knowledge society, activity-based and self-directed learning is indispensable. This volume demonstrates that this also applies to collocational foreign language skills. It explains to what extent collocations, as omnipresent, conventionalized multi-word expressions, optimize human language processing and relativize the minimalist assumptions of generative grammar models. The dictionary-cum-corpus prototype LogoTax, designed as a learning tool, distinguishes itself from the collocation representations of traditional dictionaries by focusing on corpus evidence, which it generalizes through machine analyses. At the same time, it discusses how computer-assisted language learning not only represents an application of computational linguistics but also provides knowledge-enhancing impulses for foundational research in computer and cognitive linguistics.
