In recent decades, the perception of the visuality of theatrical events has gained significant attention. Costumes and stage design create images; they shape the aesthetic experience of the audience and their access to the play. Costumes guide the perception of the characters by defining their visual presence. The relationships between the actor's body, the costume as its covering, and the staged space contextualize the scenic body; they are the substance of the production and essential for the development of the role. In contemporary theater, the costume designer can explore the entire spectrum of possibilities: from the costume as a sculptural sign of an own reality on stage to the costume that aims to serve as everyday clothing—whether custom-made or found—as a sign of historical or contemporary temporality.
