With the help of the monastic herb garden and the knowledge of their predecessors from antiquity, medieval monks and nuns were able to alleviate many human ailments and even heal some of them. Thus, the monastery gardens became medieval centers of medicine and natural healing. Meanwhile, the healing powers of nature have almost been forgotten due to advances in modern medicine. However, recently, more and more people are turning back to natural medicine, drawing inspiration from medieval monastery gardens and the monks' descriptions of the healing effects of plants. Based on medieval sources, the author examines the healing powers attributed to plants and how they were applied, and explains how to use herbs today in teas, infusions, poultices, and smoothies.
