Product details

Early summer 1914: Heir to the throne Archduke Franz Ferdinand travels to Bosnia and Herzegovina to assert his claim to power. There, he and his wife take a bath in the crowd. It ends tragically: they are shot by a pro-Serbian nationalist. This act ignites World War I. The German journalist and author Frank Gerbert follows in the footsteps of the archduke on his journey to Sarajevo, exactly one hundred years after the assassination. He inspects the sites where the high guest made stops and compares the scenes of then with those of today. He travels through a wounded, torn Bosnia: the discord among the ethnic groups that was already simmering in 1914 escalated into a terrible war in the 1990s. Time and again, he encounters people who long for the Austrian era: Without this terrorist, we would all be speaking German today.
