Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein (1882-1958), sister of the philosopher Ludwig and the one-handed pianist Paul, embodied like few other women from the bourgeois milieu of the turn of the century the emergence of a time of self-determined and self-assured women. The immense wealth of the Wittgenstein family was a commitment for her to promote the new art that she encountered in the Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte. Klimt portrayed her. She was a patron, intellectual, and salonnière: splendid parties and invitations attended by prominent figures from politics and culture made her salon a sought-after meeting place in Viennese society.
