In recent years, the traumatic long-term effects on children of war have increasingly become a topic in the media. Here, students from a Duisburg high school class recount how they survived the war. After the heavy bombing raids in the Ruhr area, most of the authors were placed with friends and relatives in less threatened regions and also in KLV camps of the Hitler Youth. They describe how, completely on their own, far away from their parents and only 8 to 10 years old, they endured the difficult wartime period without traumatic consequences. The documentation includes the accounts of 13 authors, of whom 12 were evacuated. The range of reports about the KLV camps is particularly interesting, spanning from a paramilitary camp to a musically oriented KLV camp in a luxury hotel. Only one author was not evacuated and spent the entire war period in Duisburg.
