This book is the long-awaited continuation of the well-known introduction to Vipassana meditation, the practice of mindfulness. It now guides the reader into the second half of Buddhist meditation practice, Samatha, the realm of deep concentration or absorption. Over the past two millennia, these two paths have been established and refined as parallel paths for good reason: they both work, and they work best together. They are intertwined and support each other. The Buddha did not actually teach Samatha and Vipassana as two separate systems; rather, he left us a meditation path, a collection of tools, with which one can free oneself from suffering. Once again, this book is not a philosophical or theoretical text, but a practical manual intended to serve meditators.
