Even those who do not translate from Pali but wish to correctly understand the translated discourses of the Buddha need a foundational knowledge of Pali terms. It took one hundred and fifty years for Indological research to gain a clear picture of the great Indian doctrine of salvation, and the discussion on some key terms is still ongoing. This book addresses these terms. It is intended as a supplementary dictionary of Pali Buddhism, but it does not treat the keywords in a lexically concise manner; instead, it presents them in the form of essays with some depth. Some of these terms exist in multiple interconnected contexts and cannot be translated with a single German word. The Buddhist schools that emerged after the Pali Buddhism have adopted many terms from Pali, some of which have been further developed, while others have taken on new meanings.
