In this critical history of scientific biblical interpretation from the Enlightenment to the present, it is argued that from the very beginning, it was believed that reason excludes the existence of the living God, who acts wonderfully in the lives of people. A reasonable "historical-critical" interpretation could only concern how Jesus and the early Christians likely conceived of God and lived in faith in Him. Young theologians are meant to gain the conviction through this book that this entire approach to "biblical criticism" is based on false premises both theologically and historically; and they should be encouraged to take seriously the reality of the God proclaimed in the Bible in their exegesis.
