Epicurus in his garden, Diogenes in the barrel, the stoic sage who remains unperturbed, or the skeptic who doubts everything in principle – these archetypes of philosophical wisdom have remained memorable to this day. This collection of sources includes the previously hard-to-access and, in part, newly translated teachings of the older Cynics and Cyrenaics, Stoics, Epicureans, and Skeptics. Its central theme is the question of the right path to a happy life. The answers, situated in the tension between pleasure and tranquility, friendship and cosmopolitanism, wealth and self-sufficiency, fate and death, are characterized by argumentative clarity and intellectual sovereignty.
