Jacob Burckhardt's "The Culture of the Renaissance in Italy" is a classic example of great cultural-historical literature; its subject is an era that can be considered the brightest chapter in European cultural history. In six sections, Burckhardt outlines the contours and forms of the uomo universale based on original Latin and Italian sources. Central aspects include the development of the modern individual, the novel discovery of the world and humanity through travel, natural exploration, and landscape perception, as well as the forms of higher sociability, which Burckhardt vividly illustrates through the example of the courtier and the position of the educated woman. This edition is based on the last version edited by Burckhardt himself. The appendix includes a detailed index along with the original text.
