After Aeschylus and Sophocles, the collection of the three great tragedians is now complete with Euripides. In fact, he managed to surpass his famous predecessors in terms of popularity. His literary significance extends to the present day; he is indispensable on German stages. J.J. Donner's classic translation is particularly notable for respecting the ancient meter. The only complete edition of the surviving dramas of Euripides in German appears in two volumes. Volume I includes The Bacchae, Alcestis, Andromache, Electra, Hecuba, Helen, Heracles, The Heracleidae, and Hippolytus. Bernhard Zimmermann's informative preface, separate introductions to each of the included dramas, afterwords on the conditions of creation and performance of ancient drama, family trees, and a glossary make the volumes a bibliophile study.
