Bachofen's "Mother Right" has long been a classic. With his thesis on matriarchy as the original form of society, Bachofen was the first to dare to speculate about the historical conditioning of gender roles and the idea that patriarchy might be a temporary phenomenon. He contributed to addressing the crisis of masculinity that became particularly acute after the lost war in the 1920s. Generations of authors have been influenced by him; they read the text in the Kröner edition. On the occasion of the 200th birthday of the Basel antiquarian and jurist, a selection of his most impactful texts, which were published in several annotated editions by Kröner Verlag starting in 1925, is being re-released. In addition to "Mother Right" (1861), it includes "An Attempt on the Grave Symbolism of the Ancients" (1859) and "The Legend of Tanaquil" (1870), newly and extensively introduced.
