The present novel is the 11th and final one written by George MacDonald Fraser. Upon the book's release, which sold more hardcover copies than any previous Flashman novel, he was 80 years old and in great shape. Prior to this, some critics had claimed that Flashy had become wiser and milder in the last books. Fraser responded: "I believe he has become somewhat more mature. This is undoubtedly related to my own aging process. But I don't think he has become nicer." And how did he feel about Flashman? "I've been living with him for almost forty years now. I naturally have strong feelings for him, but I don't think I would have liked him very much. However, I share his general philosophical views. I am more of a cynic and don't believe in the goodness of people." In fact, Flashy tends to adopt milder views in his later works. Flashman's campaign is among them.
