Artists and draftsmen trace the changes in construction within their societal context in an international comparison. The chosen subject of investigation, mechanical engineering, was the leading sector for both industrial development and the formation of engineering sciences. The first part of the book addresses the development of construction theory at technical universities and the emergence and training of design departments in the German mechanical engineering industry; the second part takes a comparative look at Great Britain, the USA, and France. Artists and draftsmen offers a cultural comparison of mechanical engineering, the engineering profession, and engineering education in the four major industrial countries during the phase of high industrialization.
