For a long time, the treatment of immigrant children was largely avoided by local psychotherapists. Currently, it is becoming more difficult to evade this issue in light of the therapeutic needs of young refugees. Considering cultural sensitivity, many assumptions appear outdated. The diagnostic peculiarities in immigrant ethnicities are less pronounced than generally assumed: somatizations are not necessarily more frequent, but they can represent equivalents for mental disorders. Enuresis may occur more frequently, and selective mutism may indicate familial distress. The rates of anxiety, depression, and especially post-traumatic disorders among refugees are significantly elevated. The central importance of shame and guilt conflicts should not be underestimated; it could explain the increased suicidality among young migrant women.
