The artifacts of humanity, insofar as they have been designed with aesthetic considerations, their historical functions and contexts, as well as the accompanying ideas and theories, are the subject of art history. The discipline thus examines all types of architecture, images, sculptures, but also design, photography, film, fashion, digital images, and ephemeral performances. Central and current challenges in the field arise, among other things, from the question of how historical concepts can be connected with a timeless notion of art, how European-Western ideas can align with global forms of art production, and not least, in what ways aesthetic decisions and images are effective in all areas of human life and knowledge.
