When Miroslav Sasek visited New York in the late 1950s, the Big Apple was the largest city in the Western world, and everything there was grand: New York had the tallest skyscrapers, the worst traffic jams, the biggest harbor, and the most magnificent department stores. While other cities have since surpassed New York in terms of size, its unique charm and magical allure remain unchanged. We explore uptown and downtown, taking elevators, buses, and subways, visiting Wall Street and Chinatown, the Guggenheim Museum and Coney Island, Central Park, and restaurants of all nationalities. We admire the iconic skyscrapers, Times Square, and Manhattan at night, but we also take a look at fire hydrants, fire escapes, and peanut vending machines. And of course, we observe the typical New Yorkers: passersby and playing children, shoeshiners and elevator operators.
