A rather younger woman is going on a journey to Cameroon with the man. The narrator writes: "Cameroon! Just the word has always held a fascinating allure for me. Of all the foreign countries, it was always the black continent that attracted me the most, and within that, Cameroon. Even as a child, I devoured all travel descriptions related to it and, as a Hamburger, I often watched the Woermann Line steamers depart for Cameroon, which I never wanted to miss. Often, I couldn't hold back my tears, so that many smiling glances from the people gathered at the quay fell upon the little, chubby girl whose sorrow was incomprehensible to everyone. I would never have believed that my fervent wish would one day come true; yet fate was kind to me, bringing me a partner who had already traveled to Cameroon for five years and felt a deep love for this beautiful country. He understood and appreciated my longing, and I was overjoyed when he promised me a trip to Cameroon as a wedding gift." The book is a short travel report, which is naturally also influenced by colonial undertones. Germany and its colonies still seem to represent a kind of standard in a way, even in 1924, at the time of publication, despite the end of German colonialism after World War I in 1918. Accordingly, one should read the book with a certain "questioning distance" as a historical document. Additionally, one will always recognize a "temporal condition" (as well as in the language) in Jenny Neralc's account.
