Today, the Foundations of Music History are considered classics in musicology (Michele Calella). However, they emerged from the extensive methodological reflections of Carl Dahlhaus in connection with his equally groundbreaking Music History of the 19th Century. The relevance of the Foundations of Music History remains evident, particularly through the intensified research on Dahlhaus' music historiographical concept in recent years. Therefore, it is all the more important that this book is now available again. A commentary introduction by Michele Calella complements the volume and describes its significance for musicology.
