For the first time, a reference work of encyclopedic dimensions is dedicated to the oldest musical instrument in human history: the human voice. The new lexicon of the singing voice approaches this phenomenon from an enormous variety of perspectives with nearly 800 entries, addressing all forms of singing. In doing so, it fills a long-standing gap in music literature. Diverse approaches create a detailed picture: the wealth of topics presented is impressive. Physiological aspects such as the anatomy of the (singing) voice and voice formation are treated in the lexicon as thoroughly as the different voice types and singing techniques. Significant importance is also given to questions of vocal pedagogy and the art of singing performance, as well as the developments in choral music and church music.
