Warehouses are increasingly becoming the focus of inventory-light logistics with streamlined distribution processes. Inbound and outbound processes, as well as transport operations, need to be handled faster, more flexibly, and at lower costs – all while the number of items and picking operations, as well as data quality, are on the rise. Within the framework of process organization, it can be assumed that the scope of work will expand and the importance of the warehouse will grow. Tasks from the area of planning are increasingly being moved to the warehouse, closer to the storage location. The just-in-time philosophy, e-business, and KANBAN systems, in conjunction with supply chain methods, accelerate this process by shifting from demand-oriented planning to consumption-based automatic replenishment. New, expanded job responsibilities and increased accountability in a lean warehouse require in-depth knowledge of technical-organizational and operational processes.
