The 6th Conference of the German-speaking Medical Society for Paraplegia (DMGP) was held from April 9 to April 12, 1992, in Markgroningen. Approximately 400 participants from our 30 centers in Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and West Germany attended. Fifty speakers contributed to the congress theme of long-term outcomes and late results in spinal cord injury. In seven working groups for doctors, nursing, physiotherapy, sports therapy, occupational therapy, social services, and psychology, practical profession-related and patient-related issues were explored in depth. A review and presentation of achievements demonstrate the qualitative improvements in the care of individuals with paraplegia. The use of helicopters in accident rescue and the surgical as well as intensive medical measures have increased the number of lives saved, and the possibilities for individualized care are expanding.
