For Kenya Hara, the beginning of design lies in the understanding of the unknown. The concept of "exformation," which was already dedicated a chapter in Designing Design (2007), continues to engage the Japanese designer. In contrast to the word "information," "exformation" describes what we do not know and thus becomes the starting point for any form of design. Through a range of projects from Kenya Hara's teaching at Musashino Art University, the book demonstrates how "exformations" can manifest in design practice and what changes they imply for a classical understanding of information design. Following the publication of Designing Design (2007) and its successor Weiss (2010), Ex-formation represents another exploration of emptiness, absence, and indeterminacy in contemporary design.
