When the Romanian-German Johanna returns from a business trip, she receives a surprising call - it's Udo, her former fiancé who left her over 20 years ago. They arrange to meet in Frankfurt, but he doesn't show up. After Johanna learns that Udo died in a fatal accident on his way to see her, she decides to fly to Sibiu to learn more about Udo's past and his renewed interest in her. There, she encounters several crimes that may be connected to his death. She meets a new love, reconnects with old friends, and finds herself. Above all, she discovers why Udo left her all those years ago. This novel paints a picture of Romania from the perspective of the Transylvanian Saxons, addressing the entanglements among people and the current divisions within the country.
