A ghost is on the loose - something returns, makes an appearance, even though it has already been declared dead, haunting bodies, places, and objects, despite having no place in the presence of the living. Modernity and the contemporary era dedicated themselves to combating belief in ghosts, yet simultaneously generated whole legions of specters - it was precisely the ghost-skeptical age of the Enlightenment that led to a discursive reinforcement of belief in ghosts, and mass media has proven to be breeding grounds for media phantasmagorias. Even in the early 21st century, the ghosts are still awake: they populate large parts of popular culture in various forms, appear as (thought) figures in theoretical and artistic discourses, and serve as ciphers of the socio-political imaginary. Learning to live with the ghosts; this is the focus of the present conceptual volume.
