Clemens Brentano, during a multi-year stay in Dülmen, was dedicated to carefully recording the often fragmentary and sometimes coherent statements of the visionary Anna Katharina Emmerich. This resulted in a diary that initially offered a great variety of religious reflections on the lives of saints, church festivals, and contemporary issues starting from January 1820; however, in the years 1821 and 1822, it increasingly focused on the life of Christ and the holy figures surrounding him.
