Product details
Julie Wolfthorn - at the beginning of the 20th century, she was one of the most active and well-known female artists in Germany. Käthe Kollwitz and Max Liebermann valued her work. She played a significant role in shaping the reformist cultural life of Berlin, was an excellent networker, and was active in many associations. The list of her portraits reads like a who's who of the society of that time. However, today Julie Wolfthorn is forgotten, known only to a small circle. This is partly due to the art historical writing and research, which has generally long overlooked female artists. Additionally, it is also rooted in the biography of the painter and graphic artist. She was of Jewish descent. With the rise to power and the onset of the persecution of Jews, Julie Wolfthorn's life changed radically. She too was increasingly marginalized from society. In 1942, at nearly 80 years old, she was deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, where she survived for another two years - even in that place, she continued to work, albeit secretly. Heike Carstensen first compiles and evaluates the scattered sources. A biographically oriented text, which also presents her artistic development, is followed by a commented catalog featuring nearly 500 works. This is a first cornerstone to rescue the painter and graphic artist Julie Wolfthorn (1864-1944) from oblivion and to give her a deserving place in art history.
