Karate is a non-armed combat sport with a high global prevalence. However, there is relatively little known about the performance physiological requirements in the three disciplines of Kihon (basic exercises), Kata (forms), and Kumite (fighting). Similar to other combat sports, in the past, conclusions were often drawn about the energy demand being primarily covered by anaerobic glycolysis based on one-time blood lactate values after sport-specific exertions. Both training guidelines in recreational sports and framework training plans in elite sports were based on these assumptions. In the course of this performance diagnostic investigation, the energetic profile of a fundamental Shotokan Karate Kata lasting about 30 seconds is examined using extensive respiratory gas and blood lactate analyses, along with a multi-component model.
