Picturesquely located on the edge of the Harz mountains, the more than thousand-year-old town of Goslar, with its medieval churches, hundreds of half-timbered houses, and significant secular buildings including the Imperial Palace, where German emperors and kings held court for two centuries, is one of the most beautiful towns in Germany. Together with the mining facilities at Rammelsberg, the old town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.
