In "Myths and Metals," Jörg Mull develops a historical scenario for the late Bronze Age in the eastern Mediterranean, where the regional commercial networks between the cultural centers collapsed within just a few years at the end of the era. He identifies difficulties in the supply of essential raw materials, copper and tin, as crucial factors contributing to the vulnerability of the economic system. Through a holistic approach, the economic, archaeological, and historical perspectives on this crisis-laden period are supplemented by explanatory frameworks that can be derived from the myths—an important part of the cultural self-understanding of that time. It becomes evident that the Homeric epics can be meaningfully integrated into the argument both temporally and thematically and can serve as an additional source of information.
