Product details
In collaboration with Finn Ostertag and Tahereh Ghavanloo. Series of publications from the Institute for Social Therapeutic Aftercare and Resocialization Research (ISONA). This research examines "Execution in Free Forms" (VifF) in Saxony - an alternative form of imprisonment where inmates are prepared for reintegration in socially pedagogically supervised housing projects outside of traditional prisons. For the first time nationwide, this form of execution is available in Saxony not only for juvenile but also for adult prisoners. Central themes of the study include resocialization, recidivism prevention, and the analysis of structural, process, and outcome quality of these facilities. Methodologically, the study is based on a mixed-methods design: standardized written surveys (comprehensive surveys among residents, staff, and management, as well as additional surveys in correctional facilities) were combined with qualitative interviews and evaluated both descriptively-statistically and content-analytically. The results show overall positive effects of the VifF, particularly regarding social integration, treatment motivation, and practical everyday skills of the participants, as well as a reduction in the re-incarceration rate in the follow-up after three years. At the same time, differences between the facilities, selection processes for access, and structural challenges (e.g., target group restrictions) become evident. In terms of resocialization and desistance research, the study demonstrates that life-world-oriented forms of execution with close social integration can promote effective mechanisms for exiting criminality (e.g., social ties, employment, self-efficacy). The results also clarify that such effects must be interpreted in conjunction with selection and assignment procedures, institutional framework conditions, and aftercare.
