Spring 1943, the war has reached the small town of Rovaniemi in Lapland. The young farmer's son Viljami marries the daughter of the local shopkeeper. Lempi, who is unfamiliar with country life, moves to the farm with Viljami. To ease her burden, her husband hires the maid Elli, who secretly wishes to be by his side.
