Product details
In his prose work "A Memory for Forgetting," Mahmoud Darwish depicts a day in August 1982 in Beirut during the Israeli siege aimed at the expulsion of Palestinians from the Lebanese metropolis, using a dense, poetic, and at times cynical language. The start of the day is already difficult. During a bombing raid, he defiantly makes himself coffee before venturing out into the devastated streets of the city. His walk becomes a journey into personal and collective memory. Reflections on the fate of the Palestinians, the city of Beirut, the experience of being an outsider and exile, memories of love for a Jewish woman, and time spent in prison blend with dreams, encounters with fellow poets, and descriptions of overwhelming fears, resulting in a multifaceted, masterfully crafted text of great artistic quality.
