Product details
In 1964, Nicolas Bouvier traveled to Japan with his pregnant wife Eliane and their young son Thomas. He recorded his impressions in the "Green Notebooks" - diary entries that also contributed to the "Japanese Chronicle," a work in which Bouvier combined travel description, historical study of the European discovery of Japan, and personal reflection. Fragmentary scenes document Bouvier's experiences and feelings towards a country that would remain foreign to him until the end of his stay. Perhaps "The Empty and the Full" is one of Bouvier's most personal works precisely because it reflects his daily struggle with the Japanese way of life, describes his quest for acceptance, the moments of happiness, but also his frustration in the face of the friendly yet polite distance. With subtle humor and tireless patience.
