Between 1936 and 1938, Annemarie Schwarzenbach traveled to the USA twice to report on the economic and social difficulties during the time of the "Great Depression" and to discover a different America "beyond New York." In the midst of the "combat zone" of the Southern states, she visited factories, plantations, prisons, workers' settlements, and schools, speaking with those directly affected by the crisis. In her writings, she takes an unsentimental yet committed stance in favor of the socially disadvantaged. Her keen eye captures the atmosphere of the often devastated (industrial) landscapes as a reflection of the demoralized inhabitants. "Beyond New York" gathers Schwarzenbach's best reports and photographs from that crisis period and emphasizes her significance as one of the most important representatives of Swiss photojournalism before World War II.
