Leo Putz (1869-1940)
German, Barbara Götsch Unterberger, 2010Product details
Leo Putz (1869-1940) submitted "Bacchanal" for the IX International Art Exhibition at the Royal Glass Palace in Munich in 1905. The painting was initially accepted by the jury but was later removed from the exhibition. This decision was based on the "Lex Heinze," which prohibited the public depiction of immoral acts in literature and art in Germany. Barbara Götsch Unterberger demonstrates that Leo Putz deliberately provoked this scandal. She debunks the traditional myth of the artist as a victim of censorship and reveals how Leo Putz instead strategically used press and media reactions to successfully market his works.
