Natural resources have long been the focal point of the alpine economy. Over time, water, wood, willows, and mines have been shared and utilized in various ways: collectively or privately, jointly or individually. The contributions in this volume illustrate the roles played by different actors—rural communities, rulers, municipalities and cities, merchants, and entrepreneurs—in the utilization of alpine resources, with attention to natural and social sustainability.
