In recent decades, art science has been characterized by the fact that, similar to developments in art, it no longer pursues an overarching style formation. In this publication, internationally recognized art historians, philosophers, and media scholars approach the concept of "image" - both through classical image analyses and aesthetic questions, as well as through attempts to find a new scientific term for art. The authors, including Felix Ensslin, Hans Dieter Huber, Jean-Baptiste Joly, Ute Meta Bauer, Katharina Sykora, and Beat Wyss, discuss how we read images and what significance they hold in our thinking today. A total of 28 artworks, from artists such as John Baldessari, Gianfranco Baruchello, Holger Friese, Matthias Hoch, Christian Jankowski, Stephan Jung, Markus Schinwald, and Peter Weibel, exemplify this diversity.
