Product details

Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889-1943) is considered one of the most significant female artists in Switzerland in the 20th century. As an early avant-gardist, she was active in various artistic fields: in painting and graphic design, in sculpture and textile design, in dance and puppet theater, as well as in architecture. Additionally, she emerged as the editor of an important art magazine. After her education in applied and fine arts in Munich, Sophie Taeuber-Arp settled in Zurich in 1914. She worked as a freelance designer and led the textile class at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts starting in 1916. At the Tanner Gallery, she met her future husband, Hans Arp, and performed as a dancer at several Dada soirées. From the mid-1920s, she took on the interior architectural design of various buildings in Strasbourg and Paris, where she moved at the end of the 1920s. There, she joined the group "Abstraction-Création" and published the magazine "Plastique" (1935-1937). Fleeing from the German troops, she first went to Grasse in 1940 and then to Switzerland in 1942, where she died from carbon monoxide poisoning in the house of Max Bill on the night of January 12/13, 1943. As the wife of Hans Arp, Sophie Taeuber-Arp was at times overshadowed by his fame, but today she is undeniably regarded as an artist of equal and outstanding stature, as reflected in numerous international exhibitions.
